Why It Matters
Adipose (fat) tissue, particularly visceral fat around the abdomen, releases inflammatory cytokines that interfere with insulin signaling pathways. This leads to insulin resistance. Losing just 5-10% of body weight can dramatically improve insulin sensitivity and, in some cases, lead to remission of Type 2 Diabetes.
Common Mistakes
- Assuming BMI is a diagnostic tool: BMI does not distinguish between fat mass and muscle mass. A heavily muscled athlete may have an "Obese" BMI but low body fat and excellent insulin sensitivity.
- Ignoring waist circumference: Where you carry the weight matters more than the total weight. Abdominal obesity is a much stronger predictor of diabetes risk than gluteofemoral (hip/thigh) obesity.
