While the Glycemic Index (GI) tells you how quickly a food raises blood sugar, it ignores portion size. The Glycemic Load (GL) combines the GI with the actual grams of carbohydrate in a serving to provide a realistic picture of the food's real-world impact on your blood glucose.
The Math (Manual Calculation)
Glycemic Load = (Glycemic Index × Grams of Carbohydrate) / 100
Example: Watermelon. Watermelon has a high GI of 73. However, a standard cup serving only contains about 11g of carbohydrates because it is mostly water. (73 × 11) / 100 = 8.0. Despite a high GI, the GL is Low, meaning a standard portion will not cause a massive spike.
Why It Matters
Relying solely on Glycemic Index can cause patients to unnecessarily restrict healthy foods (like carrots or watermelon) while over-consuming "low GI" foods that are heavily processed or packed with fat. GL provides a more pragmatic approach to Nutrition.
Common Mistakes
- Forgetting mixed meals alter GL: The GL of a plain baked potato is high. However, if you eat that potato with a steak (protein) and butter (fat), the digestion slows down drastically, lowering the functional GL of the entire meal.
- Treating lows with low-GL foods: If you are experiencing hypoglycemia, you need a High-GL food (like juice or glucose tabs) to spike your blood sugar immediately. Do not treat a low with chocolate or peanut butter.
